Aichi Humanities Renaissance
- Become a Discoverer of Tradition and a Leader in Cultural Creation in the Global Age
The Faculty of Japanese Studies is a comprehensive learning institution for the humanities. The Faculty aims to cultivate a deep understanding and broad knowledge of Japanese?culture through language, history, literature, and society, to become a discoverer of traditions, and to open one's horizons to the world with an understanding of the diverse cultures that can be seen from these traditions. We nurture leaders of intellectual creativity who have acquired a perspective that connects people to people, people to society, and the world to Aichi.
Greetings from the Dean
The world of humanities and sociology considers?the way people and society have come to be and looks ahead to where they will go. The depth of history, the three-dimensionality of society, the deepness of thought, the profundity of the mind, and the ability to verbalize this are the subjects of study. With Japan as its axis, the School of Japanese Studies is based in Aichi and looks out over the world. It is an area worthy of immersion in a university life full of ambition, anguish, and fulfillment. Students and faculty learn together through the multi-layered curriculum of both departments and through collaboration with other faculties, off-campus cultural facilities, and overseas partner universities. We nurture individuals who will acquire intellectual creativity and play an active role in the local and international communities.
Department of Japanese Language & Literature

The Department of Japanese Language & Literature consists of three major fields: Japanese and Chinese literature, which covers a wide range of literature and thought from ancient to modern times and Japanese linguistics, which covers the structure of language and its historical and geographical changes. From the perspective of the language and literature that have existed?during various periods and in various regions of Japan, the department explores the social, cultural, and regional framework in which we live as "Japan" as well as the nature of "Japanese" culture in the world.
In addition, students in this department will acquire specialized knowledge and skills in language, literature, and thought and cultivate broad perspectives, solid analytical skills, and problem-solving abilities through interdisciplinary studies in the humanities.

What is "Japanese Historical and Social Culture?" Thinking about our world from multiple perspectives.
The Department of Japanese History & Culture considers what Japanese history and culture means from a global perspective and considers our society from multiple perspectives.
The Department of Japanese History & Culture offers three pillars of study in Japanese history, culture, and society: historical and cultural studies, sociocultural studies, and comparative cultural studies. Students can specialize in each area of historical and cultural studies in relation to the discovery of issues in contemporary society and future prospects.
As we look to the future of the globalizing international community, it will become increasingly important to have a perspective that looks at where we are today and where we came from. The studies in this department will surely help you to become a transmitter of solid intellectual imagination based on historical and cultural perspectives.
The Department of Japanese History & Culture helps to nurture human resources required in various fields, including those who can contribute to the development of local culture in government, those who can meet the demands of industry and respond to the rapidly changing international affairs, those who can play a central role in the management of educational institutions and cultural facilities such as schools and museums, and those who can work in cultural industries such as publishing and mass media.
